Crafty Chic

Someday, I will live in a place where I can hang one of these pegboards on my wall with strategically-placed balls of colorful yarn on spools to create a homey and beautiful design.  Yes, it's practical, but honestly, it's so adorably cheerful and crafty chic that I can barely stand it.

Sincerest Form of Flattery?

I quote from movies and television all the time.  Some of the popular lines in my rotation are from Friends, The Office and Seinfeld, along with such classic films as Empire Records, Sixteen Candles and The 40-Year Old Virgin. Obviously, these are movies that everyone has seen, and no one is ever confused when I spew out a random, seemingly unrelated quote mid-conversation.

Another fave of mine is the Tina Fey-penned Mean Girls. This morning, I actually said, "She needs to stop trying to make 'fetch' happen." And it was awesome because it totally worked with what we were talking about. I also love saying, "Go home..." and gesturing with my thumb, which is also a Mean Girls highlight ("I just have a lot of feelings!").

Yeah, I'm cool.xo

Funny Ladies



Last year, I fell in love with this little sitcom on NBC called BFF, written by and starring Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Clair. It was extremely funny with snappy dialogue and realistic, relatable characters.  Right after I saw the first episode, I started looking into comedy writing classes and rules for improv so that I could try to infuse my own work with a few laughs and maybe some day write something just as wonderful as BFF. That's how good it was.  And like all good shows lately, it was cancelled after a mere six episodes. 

I'm obsessed with funny ladies lately. It's so hard to create 'good' comedy and there is nothing more satisfying than witty humor and smart writing, which brings me to the most exciting news of my week: USA has just ordered a new pilot from Parham and St. Clair. That's right, a new show from these thoughtful, hysterical comediennes. Yeeeesss.

I can't wait for this show and I hope that USA ultimately picks it up. And yes, there is a little bit of me that is expecting to see little Q pop up with some new, awesome insights. xo

Pre-Spring Wings

Sometimes it's impossible to pass up an afternoon in New York when beer and wings are promised.


The Bowlmor in Times Square hosted a wings contest on Sunday and even though I avoid Times Square normally, Anthony and I met up with friends and enjoyed chicken and PBR in the crowded bowling alley. Even though the event was kind of a cluster (too many people, some mediocre wings), the music was banging and it was a great way to spend the end of the weekend.


It was cool pre-spring day and all I wanted to do was breathe in fresh air.  We had to stand outside in line for just a little bit and it was such a tease to be surrounded by some of the best theaters in the city. Rock of Ages was next to us with Matilda and Phantom across the street right next to the new Nora Ephron play, Lucky Guy, starring Tom Hanks. There's very little I wouldn't do for two tickets to see this production.


By the way, while we were passing through Grand Central, we stopped by the awesome exhibit celebrating the station's 100th birthday in the Vanderbilt Hall entrance way.  I just loved looking at the photos taken mid-construction, the train track blueprints and even the old subway signs. Did you know that the current midtown was once considered to be waaaay uptown? So much wonderful information about the history of one of the greatest New York City landmarks. xo

A Little Bit of Housekeeping

Today was one of those rare weekdays when Anthony and I both were off from work. We actually planned this a while ago so that we could get some of those pesky wedding errands done. Both the bride and the groom need to be present to get a marriage license, and with the wedding about a month away, we haven't been able to get together while the fickle City Hall is open.  In fact, when I put up my away message on my work email, it told me that the last time I took off time was at the beginning of August 2012. That made me sad.

After returning several 'doubles' from our gift registry but before getting my wedding band sized, we stopped for a much-needed lunch at Katz's in Amity. I remember coming to this deli when I was younger but have really wanted to bring Anthony ever since our short visit to Katz's on the Lower East Side. He was totally up for it; I really didn't think he would say 'no' to cured meat anyway.


Our sandwiches were awesome. We got hot brisket on marble rye and pastrami on pumpernickel, and shared. I already have a bunch of items from the menu that I want to try on our next trip.


We accomplished everything on the list, unbelievably enough.  And our boring 'housekeeping' tasks wound up being kind of fun, except for the crazy daytime drivers on the road (no one uses turn signals anymore, and I realize that saying that makes me sound old). Now all I can think about is how much great our honeymoon is going to be: ten full days with one another. xo

Dessert for the Season

This dessert just looks like an Easter treat to me. Carrot cake and a cream cheese semifreddo (which I think is like a soft ice cream) together in sandwich-form would be perfect after a heavy holiday dinner.  Culture magazine also suggests soaking the raisins in whiskey or rum first so this might even be a great boozy treat for St. Patrick's Day. Man, I just love holiday baking...

Old School

It's a snowy Friday during Lent, which meant breakfast for dinner tonight.  I'm not sure why, but I really felt like a kid eating this meal.


Actually, maybe it was the tater tots...


The walnuts and butterscotch chips complimented the pancakes perfectly.  And it's been years since I've had tater tots but they tasted a whole lot better than I remember, sans the elementary school cafeteria residue.  Next time, we'll add a few juice boxes to complete it all. Old school 4-ever. xo
